Rania Hussein (born October 8, 1981), known as Ruby, is an Egyptian singer and actress who caused a stir in her debut controversial music video Enta Aref Leih. She is the protégée of the Egyptian director, Sherif Sabri.
Beginnings : Ruby started her career as a model when Murielle Romanoff, the Polish singer, spotted her in front of the American University in Cairo and found in her the Arabic beauty he was looking for. He chose her to be in the music video for his song Don't Make Me Cry.
Ruby later worked in television commercials for several products, including Pringles, Sparkle, and Alo. She then worked with the film director Youssef Chahine in the film Sekoot Hansawwar 2001, in which she played the role of a romantic wealthy girl who falls in love with her driver. The director Youssef Chahine is the one who gave her the name Ruby instead of Rania. And ever since she used (and still is) this name as her stage name. She also appeared in a comedy movie, titled Film Thakafy, in a minor role as a schoolgirl.
Her first music video, for the single Enta Aref Leih 2003, was directed by Sherif Sabri and was a hit on most satellite music stations in the Middle East during the summer of 2003. This video has caused a huge stir in the media, causing people and critics to critisize the way Ruby appeared in provocative costume of a Belly Dancer, wandering in the streets of Prag. Still though, the song made a huge success which with no doubt brought attention to Ruby. The song itself was a good tune, carrying the Egyptian style in form. It was composed by the well-known Egyptian composer, Mohammad Rahim.
Ruby's second video was released in early 2004. In the period between January and February. It was the music video of Leih Beydary Kedah. Directed by Sherif Sabri, the video was no less provocative than the first one. Implying slight sexual messages through the video. At the last seconds of the video, some make-over videos of Ruby are shown. How she got stylists in Beirut, recording songs with Mohammad Rahim and Sherif Sabri.
The third music video of the song El Gharaam (Koll Amma A'ollo Ah) was accompanied by clips from Ruby's movie, Saba' Wara'aat Kotcheena (7 Playing Cards) which included absolutely outrageous scenes caused the people to label Ruby as nothing more but a provocative, sex-icon. This over covered the fact that Ruby is an average vocalist with good music. The movie, was critically distressed by the censorship and governments of Egypt, Syria and many other Arabic countries which didn't allow its running due to the overtly usage of Erotic scenes. Still though, the movie itself was bland with a poor storyline. Directed and produced by Sherif Sabri, where it was his first experience in cinema.
Another two music videos were released. One for Ana Omry Mastaneat Hadd and the other for Ghawy. Both are taken from the movie Saba' Wara'aat Kotcheena (7 Playing Cards). So there was no new contents, other than being far more extended (full) in the music video than the short ones in the movie.
Eba'a Abelni music video is the latest of Ruby. The music video's theme was ancient Egyptian of Ruby dancing in set-up studios. The song, however, is different from the album version. The video's version was rearranged by Sherif Sabri. He also directed the videoclip. Ruby by this time ended up with 6 videos shot -- and 8 tracks in her album. That would make 2 songs left with no music video. She was largely supported my MelodyHits TV (an Arabic-International Music Channel) ever since her second video. The channel always broadcasted the premier of Ruby's videos.
Ruby is a former law student. She used to study Law in Cairo, but then devoted herself to become a full-time artist. She was rumored to have Moroccan roots, but she denied it. She appeared in many press releases where she was interviewed and asked about her presenting herself in this image. She was also rumored to be married to her caretaker, Sherif Sabri but Sherif himself has denied this rumor.
Currently, she's absent from the music scene. With her official website shut for no known reasons, lack of press interviews and apperances. It's unknown whether she is preparing for another album, or taking a very long break.
بدأت روبي حياتها الفنية كممثلة إلا إنها سرعان ما أتجهت إلى الغناء .. وقد يكون هذا التحول مقبولا في بعض الأحيان إذا كانت تمتلك صوتا يؤهلها لإحتلال موقع ما على ساحة الغناء التى أمتلأت عن آخرها.
وفي بداية لجؤها إلى الغناء وبعد أن قدمت البوما واحدا فقط ولم يزيد إنتاجها الفني عن أغنيتين مصورتين أحتلت روبي بسرعة عناوين الأخبار الفنية وتسابقت المجلات في نشر صورها، وأصبحت أغنية "أنت عارف ليه"، و"ليه بيداري كده" محور حديث المستمعين برغم أن كلماتهما أو لحنهما لم يعلقا في اذهان الغالبية.
ويبدو أن روبي تعتمد كثيرا على الطريقة اللبنانية التى تمثلها نانسي عجرم وهيفاء وهبي واليسا في أن المظهر أهم من الجوهر!. فبعضهن لا ترى شيئا في تقديم أغنياتها بهذه الطريقة مادام هذا ما يطلبه المشاهدون!.
ففي كليبها الأول "مشيت ورا أحساسي" أرتدت روبي ثياب الرقص الشرقي، بينما في كليب "ليه بيداري كده" تجاوزت حدود الأغنية الأولى وظهرت بعدة شخصيات منوعة: راقصة, مراهقة، رياضية ترفع الاثقال, وتتمرن على دراجة.
وروبي التي بدأت مشوارها الفني مع يوسف شاهين اذ ارتدت البكيني في اول ظهور لها في فيلم "سكوت هنصور"، كثيراً ما تقول عن نفسها انها "خجولة".
وربما هذا ما يدفع لابعض إلى القول بانها تعتمد على مفاتن جسدها غير أنها ترى شيئا اخر إذ تؤكد انها ترقص لمجرد حب الرقص وليس للاغراء.
لكن هذا لم يقنع الدكتور حمدى حسن عضو جماعة الاخوان المسلمين الذي اثار ضجة فى مجلس الشعب عندما اشتكى من مطربات بينهن روبى وبعض المغنيات اللبنانيات اللاتى "تتنافى اغنياتهن مع اخلاقيات" المجتمع المصري.
لم يكن صعود روبي في عالم الأغنية ليحدث لولا جهود مخرجها الحصري والقائم على جميع اعمالها، شريف صبري، الذي أكد انه لم يكن يتوقع أبدا كل هذه الضجة حولها.
وقال أن الانتقادات التي ثارت حول روبي بسبب ارتداء ملابس الرقص في أول اغنياتها المصورة لم يكن متوقعا في وجهة نظره "لانها – ملابس الرقص - رغم كل شيء نمط من أنماط ملابسنا".
وبالرغم من تعرضها للإنتقادات حادة حتى من بعض أقاربها الذين اثروا مقاطعتها إلا أنها تقول أنها ستواصل مشوارها، مهما كانت العقبات "لأن ما أقوم به صحيح".
وفيما بعد دفع صبري بروبي في أول أفلامه السينمائية والذي أسماه (7 ورقات كوتشينة) لكن التلفزيون المصرى رفض بث اعلانات دعائية للفيلم حتى بعد أن حذف منه نحو عشر لقطات رات الرقابة أنها مثيرة للغاية، ولم يحقق الفيلم نجاحا يذكر.
وتقول روبى وهى فى السنة الاخيرة بكلية الحقوق جامعة القاهرة انها لا تولى اهتماما كبيرا لما تقوله الرقابة.
